BAA Heathrow Consolidation Centre
Traditionally deliveries of construction materials to Heathrow airport are undertaken by individual suppliers to serve their own specific needs. This leads to congestion on airport roads, pollution, and an increased burden on airport security. Moreover it is inefficient for delivery vehicles to lie idle or pass through control posts without full loads.
A construction Consolidation Centre (CC) has therefore been set up to consolidate construction deliveries to Heathrow projects. The CC has been set up for an initial trial period of 6 months and will extend across all projects if proved successful.
The operation consists of a 20,000 sq. ft Consolidation Centre (CC) located in the existing BA hangar, Technical Block D, at Hatton Cross adjacent to Heathrow, for supplier's construction material deliveries, and a distribution service linking the Consolidation Centre with CTA projects.
Operations commenced at the beginning of November 2001 and initially dealt with deliveries for T1 South Extension, T3 Departures Project and the toilet refurbishment programme. However, all projects have been actively encouraged to use the facility at the earliest opportunity. Indeed, from early 2002 there will be a programme to roll-out construction consolidation operations across all airport projects and eventually, if the trial is successful, all suppliers deliveries will be controlled via the CC.
The CC is not a warehouse. It's purpose is to facilitate the efficient flow of materials from suppliers to sites. A maximum period of 14 days for holding any item will be targeted.
